Turn Your Image into a Good Portrait Using Photoshop

Find out how to turn your lover's picture into a good black and white portrait easily using Photoshop Color Dodge and shadow effects.
  1. Open your photo in Photoshop, try to choose a suitable image with a clear face look.

  2. Press Alt and double click the Background layer to convert it to a normal layer.
  3. Click Image > Adjustments > Desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U) to turn your image into black and white.

  4. Select the "Layer 0" layer in the Layers window and press (Ctrl+J) to duplicate it.
  5. Select the new layer and change it to "Color Dodge" in the layers window.

  6. Right click the Layers window and choose "Flatten Image" to merge the two layers.
  7. Press Alt and double click the Background layer to convert it to a normal layer.
  8. Press (Ctrl+A) to select all image, click Edit > Transform > Rotate to rotate your image if necessary.
  9. Make a new layer, move the new layer to be the backmost layer and rename this layer to BG.
  10. Set white as foreground color, select the "Paint Bucket Tool" (G), and fill the entire BG layer with white.

  11. Select "layer 0", the "Eraser Tool" (E) and delete all the parts of the image except for the eyes, eyes shading, parts of the nose and the mouth. You can press "[" or "]" on your keyboard to make the "Eraser Tool" bigger or smaller as needed.
  12. Select the Crop Tool (C) and crop around your image.
  13. Right click the Layers window and click "Flatten Image".

  14. Choose the "Magic Wand Tool" (W) and select the white area, then click Select > Inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I) to inverse selection.
  15. Press (Ctrl+C) then (Ctrl+V) to paste the selected areas into a new layer.
  16. Select the new layer, at the bottom of the layers window, click "Add layer style" , choose "Drop Shadow" and modify the shadow settings as the following image.
