Fit Text in a Shape

bitmap_vector (1K)
Find out how you could get many text effects by using Photoshop work path to type a text at the border of any shape or fit the whole paragraph into any desired shape easily.
  1. Open Photoshop, click File > New, give a name and dimensions to your new image and choose white as a background contents then press Ok.
  2. Choose "Custom Shape Tool (U)", select any desired shape from the tool bar located at the top of Photoshop and make sure that you choose a shape that is not complicated to get better results for example, a circle or a heart shape.
  3. Draw your shape with the desired size.

  4. Select the shape layer, hold the Ctrl key and click the shape layer to make a selection from the shape you have just chosen and delete the shape layer.
  5. Choose Paths palette, if is not visible, Click Window > Paths and click "Make work path from selection" located at the bottom of the Paths palette.
  6. Select the "Horizontal Type Tool (T)", if you want to type a text that forms your shape (the borders), click where you want your text to start at the border of the shape not inside it -notice that the mouse cursor changes like the next image- and start typing your text.

  7. Now whatever you type will follow the border of the shape you have chosen, you can make very good and professional text effects this way. I typed dashes at the top so the text is not upside down.

  8. What if you want your text to fit inside your shape not at the border? Instead of touching the border of the shape after selecting the "Horizontal Type Tool(T)", click anywhere inside your shape -notice the cursor now looks different from the on in the previous step- and start typing your text. For better results, choose a center alignment instead of the left alignment. Notice that text will wrap to the next line whenever it reaches the border of your shape so choose smaller words when you are close to the shape borders as I have done in this example.

its not working for me... when i right click, it doesnt show me the make work path option, i hae CS3.... does that matter? or am i a little slow?

Christina Said,

I had real problems getting this to work. I have CS3. Did you do this in a previous version? Every time I right clicked and chose CREATE WORK PATH and with the text tool selected... my shape selection disappeared.

This tutorial was done on Photoshop CS2, I don't have CS3. May be other visitors will tell us if it's the same in Photoshop CS3. What I can say now is make sure you have the shape layer selected and you right click INSIDE your selection before choosing "Make Work Path".

Well, somehow when I went back to try it today....it worked. However, I didn't have to go through all of the trouble of deleting the shape layer and creating a work path. I just clicked on the border and hit the text tool and it did it all for me. CS3 must have made a few shortcuts. It is frustrating though when you have to get up and wait til the next day before your computer wants to do what you need it to do... haha

Doesn't seem to work in Photoshop 7. I don't get the different looking text cursor like in the picture. Unless I'm doing something worng but as far as I can tell I'm following all the instructions!

I see your text sits on the inside of the image. HOw do you do this? When I right click on the inside, my text always frames the outside. I want my text to follow the image but read from left to right, not right to left.

Follow step 8 in this tutorial, click anywhere inside your shape (left click not right click)and choose left alignment from the top tool bar.

You need to do some screen shots of your instructions to make it easier to follow. It isn't always clear what you are trying to get across.

TutorialsRoom Said,

To Dean, I'm trying my best, just tell me which steps need screen shots and I will gladly add them.

In step four im really stuck like can you please help me out there because when i go and click to delete it it delted everything.Help!

TutorialsRoom Said,

To Mimi, you can add a new white blank layer before doing the fourth step, after you Ctrl + click the shape layer just delete it! You should have a selection with the heart shape (or whatever shape you chosen) on the new layer you have added previously.

Any response as to why this feature is not working in Photoshop 7? My cursor doesn't change. And when I attempt to type it just types in a straight line...not alone the path of the shape.

TutorialsRoom Said,

I don't have Photoshop 7 to try it with, but from many comments, I don't think this is working on Photoshop 7

This is a great tutorial. I can only get my text to follow the outside of the border. I\'d like my text to follow the inside of the border and still go around the edge but be the right way up and read from left to right. Currently the cursor always goes outside and my text is great at the top of the shape but upside down at the bottom. Any clues as to how to do this please?

Interesting how NO ONE has responded to people saying that thjis doesn't work with photoshop 7. I have tried every possible scenario and it doesn't work with 7.

TutorialsRoom Said,

NO ONE has responded? All the users who have Photoshop 7 have responded saying it does not work with Photoshop 7. This looks like a response to me :)
